No boats are allowed on the lake, with the exception of canoes licenced at Wasdale Head. The lake is the deepest in England and is often visited by divers.
At Wasdale Head the Inn serves good food and a selection of local beers (4 miles). There is also a shop providing camping supplies and outdoor equipment. The nearest shops, bakers and bank are at Gosforth (6 miles). Other good pubs serving food include The Santon Bridge Inn, The Screes (Nether Wasdale) and Ratty’s Arms (Ravenglass)
Travelling to Wasdale can be adventure - for those brave enough and with a sound vehicle the Hardnott Pass is a spectacular drive. The roads across Birker Fell or Corney Fell too offer wonderfull panaramic views, but are not so demanding of the car or driver!
To the West of the Valley is the coast, Drigg Beach is a site of special scientific interest with miles of beach and dunes, but don’t expect seaside frills. Further North is St Bees, a more traditional seaside spot where the receeding tide reveals a beautiful sandy beach with rockpools at the foot of the sandstone headland.
